Shadow work with metaphorical cards

"Shadow" and "archetype" sound esoteric, but in working use they are plain things: the parts of yourself you do not put forward, and the recurring images that make such parts easy to recognise. A card is here for the recognition. Below: a fifteen-minute practice, the decks for it and what this work does not do.

What the words mean here

An archetype in the Jungian sense is an image that recurs across tales, myths and dreams: the Sage, the Hero, the Shadow (C. G. Jung). The term is technical and describes recognising a familiar pattern, not a power of the picture.

The shadow is what a person does not admit or does not show, and it is not necessarily bad. Anger often ends up there, and so do ambition, tenderness and the wish to rest.

A part is a convenient name for a stable piece of you with its own voice and interests: "the one who keeps everything under control", "the one who wants to be liked". The work is with those names, not with a diagnosis.

None of the terms turns a card into an oracle. The image helps name a part, and from there the person speaks.

A card from the Reflection deck

The practice: three layers

Fifteen minutes, three cards. The positions set the layers: how you are known, what you keep back and who you would like to be.

  1. 1
    Public

A card for how others see you. Describe it literally and say what in that image is comfortable and what takes effort.

  2. 2
    Hidden

A card for what you do not show. Not necessarily shameful: this layer also holds what is simply not done in your circle.

  3. 3
    Wished for

A card for who you would like to be. One question to it: what keeps this from showing, and what would it cost.

  4. 4
    One sentence as the result

What from the hidden layer you are ready to show in at least one place this week. Concrete and small.

This is the Masks: public, hidden, wished-for technique. To look at the border between what you know about yourself and what others see, take the Johari window.

Which deck fits

Parts work needs faces and roles: recognition runs more precisely on those than on landscapes.

What it is not

The topic attracts a lot of extra freight, so the limits are worth stating plainly.

Not divination by archetype

The cards carry no fixed archetypes and we do not consult a table of meanings. The sense appears in your description.

Not a search for the real you

The public layer is not a mask in the bad sense and not a deception. It is also you, in a different situation.

Not reading someone else’s shadow

A card cannot identify another person’s hidden part. You are working with your own projection.

When a specialist is the better route

Shadow work comes close, and there is a limit to doing it alone.

If the hidden layer brings up strong shame or anger and the state does not settle by the evening, continue the topic with a psychologist. A card practice is not a painkiller here.

Working alone does not suit an acute state, the first days after a hard event, or thoughts of self-harm. In detail on the page about the limits of the method.

FAQ

What is shadow work in plain words?
A conversation about the parts of yourself you do not show or do not admit. Not necessarily bad ones: ambition, tenderness and the wish to rest often end up there.
Do metaphorical cards have archetypes?
The cards carry no fixed archetypes. We use "archetype" in the Jungian sense, a recurring image (C. G. Jung), and it describes recognition rather than a property of the picture. Definitions are in the glossary.
Which deck suits parts work?
Reflection (103 portraits) when a part is recognised in a face, and Urban Myth (108 scenes) when it shows through a role and behaviour.
How long does the practice take?
Fifteen minutes for three cards. Stretching it is not useful: the hidden layer tires faster than the others.
Can this be done alone?
Yes, when your state is steady. If it feels heavy afterwards and does not pass by the evening, continue with a specialist.
